Dear users,

As you might know, this site is currently using a service called stackexchange to manage the application for asking questions and answering them, as well as hosting the whole website.

The stackexchange service has been free so far, which enabled us to maintain the website for almost no cost since the beginning in October 2009 (the only cost being the DNS service).

Now the stackexchange service will stop being free in middle of July. At this point there will be several options:

Pay for stackexchange service

Convince others to support the continuation of the website under stackexchange wing (by proposing the site here)

Look for a cheaper alternative than stackexchange (for example shapado)

close AskAboutProjects.com altogether

We are currently looking at these alternatives.
In the mean time, feel free to weigh in if you wish.

We will let you know how things evolve asap.

Update concerning option #2:
I have started the process, and here is the link:

http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/10947/project-management

Note that all options are still possible; I just think the option #2 presents several advantages (no cost, and continuation of the site with a broader audience).

If you support this option, yYour help is needed:

to provide example of questions that would be considered on-topic, and off-topic;

to support the proposal (I think you might need to register on the area51 site to "follow")

spread the word

Note that there are already a few proposals for sites touching on project management:
http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/7794/scrum

http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/6537/systems-engineering-and-project-management

http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/7502/it-management

You will see that the most "advanced" proposal is the "scrum" with 90 followers.

Status update on 21st July 2010:

The site is still alive as we can all see. But it is really a matter of days or weeks before it will be closed.
Our best bet, for those interested in having such a site, is the area51 proposal here:

===> http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/10947/project-management <===

Please support this proposal. Thank you for your help!
I will let you know if I have further news.

Status update on 12th August 2010:

We still need 21 followers on the proposal for area51 site.

Don't hesitate to spread the word, using Twitter or blog posts.

Status update on 30th August 2010:

We miss only 3 followers on the proposal for area51 site. Also we miss questions... I have reached my quota there and cannot propose more questions. Perhaps you can?

I think there is a good chance that the site can continue under area51 considering the progress.
If this does not work out I will do my best to migrate it off stackexchange and keep it running. FYI I have a backup of the data so it can be rebuilt.

Thank you all for your support!

I have used Microsoft Project for years, so I am pretty familiar with it. There are a bunch of things I hate about it:

The cost is very high, per engineer on my team.

The learning curve for new users is pretty high.

The web sharing features are a difficult to setup, without help from IT.

Any web-based alternatives that work pretty well for anyone?

I have done a lot of research on PM as a career. I have a 20 year sales background (B/S in business admin) and I plan on getting a graduate cert in PM. I have read about the value of the CAPM, so I plan on taking the exam, etc.. BUT, if I am to start working as a team member, for what type of job am I searching? In other words, I go onto a job search website and type in Project Management. Most of the positions require PM experience and/or the PMP certification. PM is becoming more recognized as a career in a variety of industries. What would be the job titles that would fit my education and experience?

http://askaboutprojects.com/questions/862/best-way-to-handle-the-transition-from-project-team-to-maintenance-teamBest way to handle the transition from project team to maintenance teamKB Larsen2009-12-19T19:51:59Z2010-07-26T20:09:14Z

According to the definition "a project is a temporary endeavor, having a defined beginning and end", but it seems like the hand over to the maintenance team is a big problem in most companies.

In the past I have seen some projects where the project team handed over a huge amount of documentation, recently updated at a huge cost, yet the customer was not satisfied as the support level dropped for 3-6 months while the new team "digested" all the stuff we gave them.
Even though we tried our best in documenting the project, the maintenance kept coming back to us with new issues more then a year after hand over, which broke the rhythm on the new project.

The only efficient way to handle the transition from project to maintenance that I have seen is to turn the project team into to the maintenance team, and then start a continuous process where 10% of the project team will be replaced by the people that will support the application in the years to come.
And yes, it takes awhile and might be costly but so far it is the only process that I have seen that will provide a smooth transition.

I would love to hear about the approaches that you have seen that actually works.

http://askaboutprojects.com/questions/2154/pm-academic-qualification-or-capmPM academic qualification or CAPM?Harsha2010-07-23T06:03:02Z2010-07-26T20:05:17Z

I have close to two years project experience and looking to upgrade my qualifications.

I have a MIntBus( Master of International Business / it's like a MBA with an international focus) from University of Auckland in NZ.

I've been accepted to the online GCPM from Boston University.

Recently I was talking to a PM friend and he reckons that getting a qual like CAPM is better recognized than another academic qualification. I am a bit confused by this.

Should I do the GCPM from BU or CAPM?

http://askaboutprojects.com/questions/1605/management-reserve-risk-contingency-and-the-performance-measurement-baselineManagement Reserve, Risk Contingency, and the Performance Measurement BaselineDavid E PMP2010-03-15T20:42:43Z2010-07-26T20:04:10Z

This is a follow on discussion from a current one on Linkedin. I would like to get additional input from others on how folks are handling reserves within your performance measurement baseline (PMB).

The standard is to establish your management reserves (MR), which GAO defines as "known unknowns," outside of your PMB. Thus, your PMB plus MR would be your total budget base. The MR has rules governing its use; generally speaking, it can be used for unforeseen growth that is considered in scope, and risks, but not to be used to offset variances.

The key with MR is the funds are outside of the PMB.

The question is, do folks define management reserves differently than contingency reserves established through risk management?

I surmised on the Linkedin discussion that it was appropriate to establish contingency reserves within your work packages and control accounts, thus establishing reserves within your PMB. I wrote that establishing contingency for risks associated with that particular work package or WBS element and loading the expected impact value is an appropriate estimating action. A simple example would look like this: I estimate 30 days of duration for activity A. Risk 1 has a 10%, 5-day exposure; risk 2 has a 15%, 3-day exposure. The total duration I would baseline would be 31 days (30 days + (10%*5) + (15%*3) rounded).

Of course, the increase in duration would increase hours and ultimately costs.

So the difference between MR and risk contingency to me is MR is a reserve account for risks that have not been identified and risk contingency is for those that have been identified with your current effort under your WBS. In fact, your risk mitigation actions would be identified and funded in your WBS, making it part of your PMB. So it seems reasonable to have your funded contingency actions within your PMB, too.

The experts on Linkedin disagreed and provided really good arguments, definitions, and practices. Despite that, it is still counter-intuitive to me. My goal for asking this here is not to "prove" these guys, for whom I have a ton of respect, wrong. I just want to see what others are doing regarding this. And are there other schools of thinking?

Thoughts, opinions, or comments? Thanks!
