What kind of product? – Mark Phillips Feb 4 at 23:40
The product is an IT service. It's kind of generic, but I am actually interested in a generic wbs to have an idea of the common items for a product launch. I am thinking of development, tests, validation, technical support training, marketing material, ? ... – Jacques Bianco Feb 8 at 11:22

If you are a member of PMI you can access the book about WBS online (logged in) and there are quite a few examples of WBSs for different scenarios. Unfortunately there is no 1:1 example for a product launch but it took me 30 minutes to figure out a solid WBS for my own project which was also not covered by the examples.

These 30 minutes are a good investment as you get to know more about WBS which actually helped me moving forward.

For copyright reasons I cannot simply copy it into here.

The book is called "Practice Standard for Work Breakdown Structures - Second Edition" (ISBN 10: 1-933890-13-4)

Try Glen Alleman's blog Herding Cats.

Here is the WBS search results. http://herdingcats.typepad.com/my_weblog/wbs/ One of the top entries is a link to the US DoD reference guide for the WBS.

I came to this site through another WBS search:

http://www.emergingtechnologypartners.com/index.html

and I remembered your question.

Click on "Product Launch List" and you will get a Product Launch WBS in graphical and in list format. It didn't show very nice in my browser (Chrome), but still I think you may find it usefull. It even has descriptions of the lowest levels.

Enjoy!
