Despite all the discussion whether the PM tools are needed or not, most of us use some tools (no matter if it is a software or a whiteboard). What is that single most wanted feature that you miss in your PM tool? What is that tiny little thing about which you often think "I wish it (the tool) could do that"?

Depends on a tool.

  1. For a whiteboard: lack of backup. Photos doesn't work very well here - you'd need pretty high resolution to read content of sticky notes.

  2. For web-based apps: I don't know whether you'd call it a feature but it's working on multiple records. I can even deal with responsiveness of web apps (which is crap when compared to desktop apps) but haven't seen yet an app which allows you to create a schedule with some dependencies, assigned resources etc and doesn't make you miss MS Project at the same time. The same is with adding a long list of tasks or bugs. That's mostly specifics of web-based applications in general, not specific for PM tool.

Other than that I can't remind a specific feature which I couldn't find anywhere. There are some however which I found only in crazy-expensive tools.

Three things I would like to see in more PM tools:

  • Detailed change history for tasks/assignments
  • Work velocity graphs for individuals and teams
  • Better integration with defect tracking, assignment manage, and documentation systems.

Have a tool that combines all in one and not to have to switch to 10 applications for

  • creating the WBS
  • creating an documents like Project Charter, WBS dictionary, activity attributes, and so on
  • creating a network diagram (a proper one, not the one in MS Project)
  • creating the project management plan (according to the PMBOK)
  • tracking project progress
  • ...

Wouldn't it be nice to have just one application where you could do that in instead of switching? That would be the one thing I am missing :-)

I want a single scheduling tool that takes me from initial planning to controlling. A tool that allows me to build a WBS with various views, e.g., outline structure or picture. A tool that allows me to sequence the WBS in a network diagram, allowing me to manipulate sequence, dependencies, constraints. A tool that allows for estimation of both time and cost. A tool that will allow for Monte Carlo analysis, PERT analysis. A tool that will link to the development of the WBS Dictionary, where any changes in my estimations will automatically update the dictionary. A tool that will automatically generate my CAPs and WADs. A tool where I can control the way in which I want to track EV, eg, progress, LREs, EAC calculations, where I can use different methods for different control accounts depending on need. A tool that allows me to structure my own reports to meet customer requirements. A tool that allows for excel extracts for further manipulation.

I know, I'm asking for too much.

A tool that would integrate:

  • communication within the project team
  • and project / task / change request status

For example: you click on a project, see a list of tasks and their status, click on a specific task and see the latest status update and can edit it and use that to communicate with the team on this specific task (so you don't need to use emails, and you can quickly see the latest status right there).

I am generally with the others. I just wish I had one scalable tool that could combine

  • MS Project
  • Basecamp
  • Bugzilla
  • Google Calendar
  • Desktop To-list
  • Harvest

I hate that I am jumping through various programs and firefox tabs all day. Just give me one end-to-end solution for interactive professionals.

One that will do the job FOR me (successfully), then send me the paycheck. ;)
